2022 Volvo XC40 Facelift With Hybrid Powertrain
Volvo has also relaunched a slightly updated version of the ICE XC40 for 2022 while the all-electric XC40 Recharge garners all the attention. There are some minor changes made to the car’s design and interior, but it is not a significant divergence from the previous model. The mild hybrid system under the hood, which reportedly increases the efficiency of the previous 2.0-liter petrol powertrain by 15%, is what’s new. Exterior Changes:
With more angular headlights that still feature the distinctive “Thor’s hammer” LED Daytime Running Lights and a new bumper with triangular fog lamp housings that are finished in gloss black, Volvo has given the XC40 a crisper look this time around. The clamshell bonnet shape and large, gloss black grille with the Volvo logo in chrome continues to be present up front as do the other components.
The alloy wheels for the XC40 facelift have a new design on the side. However, in contrast to the dual-tone diamond-cut design of the pre-facelift automobile, the five-spoke silver-colored alloy wheels appear somewhat basic. The dual-tone paint option has also been dropped by Volvo, and the roof is now body color. Interestingly, the XC40 facelift does receive black roof rails and wing mirrors.

Engine Performance:
The Volvo XC40 has undergone maybe its largest update under the hood. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder T4 turbo-petrol engine is still present in the updated model, but it now features a 48V mild-hybrid system, which has an effect on the driving experience. The four-pot motor is still a quiet, elegant machine when it is idling, with hardly any noise or vibrations entering the cabin.
The engine’s output has only increased by 7 horsepower (to 197 horsepower), but its 300 Nm of torque has not changed. However, compared to the previous T4 variant, this B4 mild-hybrid feels more responsive. While accelerating, you can feel the hybrid system helping, and it has also improved off-the-line response. The engine delivers power pretty linearly and smoothly all the way to the redline.
Along with enhancing performance, the mild hybrid system is anticipated to increase the XC40’s fuel efficiency. Volvo hasn’t released an official number yet, and we haven’t tested it using our fuel economy cycle.
Only an 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox is used to send power to the front wheels. The gearbox operates fairly smoothly, but it isn’t the quickest to react. The quick engine does, however, aid in covering up some of the box’s flaws. Additionally, the gearbox has a manual mode that can be accessed by using the crystal gear lever, but it lacks excitement.
Final Verdict:
There is only one fully equipped variant of the Volvo XC40 facelift, and it costs Rs. 43.20 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom, India). After the initial discount, the price will increase to Rs 45.90 lakh (Rs 1.40 lakh more than the outgoing XC40 T4), but even then, it will still be comparable to rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 (Rs 44.90 lakh) and the recently released Audi Q3 Premium Plus (Rs 44.89 lakh).
However, it doesn’t offer as much back seat comfort, and its service network isn’t as extensive as those of its German rivals. Beyond that, the Volvo XC40 continues to be a handsome SUV with safe and predictable driving characteristics, and the few improvements made by the facelift only enhance an already outstanding package.
Additionally, the mild hybrid system improves driveability and will increase efficiency.
As a result, if you’re searching for a roomy, well-equipped luxury crossover, this one is undoubtedly worth considering.
