All Souls’ Day

Roman Catholics and other Christian faiths mark All Souls’ Day, also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead, on November 2nd of each year as a day of prayer and memory for the faithful departed. Roman Catholics observe All Souls’ Day as a day to remember all the faithfully deceased, including baptized Christians who are said to be in purgatory since they passed away with the guilt of smaller sins still lodged in their souls.

In the US, All Souls’ Day is a day dedicated to praying for the souls of the dead. The cemeteries where their loved ones are interred are frequented by Christians. Candles are available in some cemeteries to lay on these graves. The candles are blessed and have names engraved on them. What distinguishes All Saints Day from All Souls Day?

How to celebrate all soul’s day

Roman Catholics observe All Souls’ Day as a day to remember all the faithfully deceased, including baptized Christians who are said to be in purgatory since they passed away with the guilt of smaller sins still lodged in their souls. It takes place on November 2.
The day is set aside for prayer and memory because, according to Roman Catholic belief, the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls and prepare them for the vision of God in heaven. Requiem masses are frequently given, and a lot of people visit and occasionally decorate loved ones’ graves.

In the Roman Catholic Church, All Souls Day is a solemn celebration honoring all those who have passed away and are currently in Purgatory, where they are being purified of their minor sins and the temporary punishments for the mortal sins they had confessed in preparation for their entrance into God’s presence in heaven.

Background of  All Soul Day

Background of  All Soul Day

Pope Benedict XV (1914–22) recognized the significance of All Souls Day by allowing all priests the honor of performing three Masses on that day: one for the faithful departed, one for the priest’s intentions, and one for the Holy Father’s purposes. Only a few other very significant feast days are permitted for priests to observe additional festivities.

On All Souls Day, we not only remember the deceased but also work toward their liberation from Purgatory via prayer, almsgiving, and worship. All Souls Day comes with two plenary indulgences: one for attending a church and the other for visiting a cemetery.

(The full indulgence for going to a cemetery is also available every day from November 1–8, as well as a partial indulgence, every day of the year.) While the deeds are carried out by the living, only the souls in Purgatory can benefit from the indulgences. Applying a plenary indulgence to sin, which is the original cause of a soul’s placement in Purgatory, removes all temporal punishment for sin, and a Holy Soul gets liberated from Purgatory and enters Heaven if it is one of the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Christian believers are required to pray for the deceased. The necessity for these prayers has only grown in the modern era, as many people have begun to question the Church’s teaching on Purgatory. The month of November is devoted by the Church to praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, so attending the Mass on All Souls Day is a fitting way to start the month.
