The Sendai Framework’s main objective is to prevent adding new risks and to lessen current risks. significant social and economic turmoil. It takes a people-centered and action-oriented approach to disaster risk reduction.

For tracking development in lowering disaster losses, the Sendai Framework comprises 38 indicators and seven strategic targets. “The Sendai Seven Campaign” was introduced in 2016 by the UN Secretary-General.

Target 

  • 2016 – Target 1: By 2030, significantly reduce the number of people killed by disasters worldwide, with a goal of lowering the average global fatality rate per 100,000 people from 2005 to 2015 to 2020 to 2030.
  • 2017 – Target 2: By 2030, much fewer individuals will be affected internationally, with a goal of lowering the average number per 100,000 people worldwide between the years of 2020 and 2030 compared to the years 2005 to 2015.
  • 2018 – Target 3: By 2030, lower the proportion of direct disaster economic loss to the world gross domestic product (GDP).
  • 2019 – Target 4: Significantly reduce the disruption of essential services and damage to important infrastructure caused by disasters, including by enhancing their resilience by 2030, among them healthcare and educational facilities.
  • 2020 – Target 5: Significantly raise the proportion of nations that have national and local disaster risk reduction policies by that year.
  • 2021 – Target 6: Significantly increase international collaboration with developing nations by providing sufficient and long-term support to complement their national efforts in order to implement the current Framework by 2030.
  • 2022 – Target 7: By 2030, significantly expand public access to information on catastrophe risk and assessments as well as multi-hazard early warning systems.
  • 1989 saw the creation of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
