Father’s Day is a celebration that honours fathers and celebrates fatherhood and the influence of fathers in society. In many countries, it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, but in many other countries, it is also celebrated on other days. India, like many other countries in the world, celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It’s not yet an official holiday in the subcontinent and is relatively new, but it’s rapidly growing in popularity.

Importance of Father’s Day?

The concept of Father’s Day has its origins in America. A woman named Sonora Dodd campaigned for every father to be honoured for her love and lifelong sacrifice. She did this because of the lasting impression left on her by her own father, who overcame many difficulties to raise her as a single mother.

In 1910, the celebration of Father’s Day began to develop. It wasn’t until 1966 that he became a national holiday in the United States, and a few years later it spread around the world, including India.

Celebration

In India, it is common to host lunches on Father’s Day or for sons and fathers to go on weekend trips together. Others celebrate more easily. Maybe it’s just a small gift, a card, a heartfelt thank you, or just watching a movie with your dad or going to a sporting event with him.

In the United States, this day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year. Father’s Day weekend is usually full of celebrations as families invite dads out for lunch and other outings.

Father’s Day is celebrated with love in India. However, children on this day recognise their father’s efforts and contributions to the family. Give Dad gifts, heartwarming cards, trips, and dinners to make him feel special. Children try to spend as much time as possible with their fathers. There are many restrictions this year due to the pandemic, but the best thing you can do is bring some celebration home.

Idea or History?

Father’s Day Story The idea of Father’s Day dates back to 1910. Mrs Sanora Smart Dodd is believed to be the ringleader of this tag. Sanora was raised with five siblings by her father after her mother died in childbirth.

For this, Dodd wanted to thank and honour his father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran.

The noble idea for her Father’s Day came after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon from Anna Jarvis of her Methodist Central Her Episcopal Church. She later contacted the pastor and suggested introducing a day to honour her father that mirrored Mother’s Day. Dodd suggested celebrating Father’s Day in June, which happened to be the month of his father’s birthday.

In 1913, Congress received a bill aimed at approving Father’s Day. In 1916, Congress rejected a motion to make the day an official holiday. However, the movement to have Father’s Day recognised as a federal holiday continued for years.

In 1966, many men left their families to join the Second World War. During this time, his father’s contribution to the family was remarkable. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation to observe Father’s Day in the United States on the third Sunday in June. In 1972, President Richard Nixon declared it a permanent national holiday.

The history of Father’s Day dates back to 1910 when it was first celebrated by Sonora Smart Dodd on the third Sunday in June. Father’s Day is a day when we feel celebrated, loved, and cherished and want to show our love and appreciation for all that our fathers have done for us.
