In response to a request from the Turkish government, the United Nations agreed to recognize the name change on June 1, 2022, and will now refer to Turkey as Turkiye. In December 2021, Turkey began a campaign to rebrand itself.
“Türkiye is the greatest example and appearance of the Turkish cultures and people, civilization, and value systems,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in December.
The plea for a title was earned by the United Nations this week and was formally filtered right away. On June 1, a document from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was received by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, it was requested that “Türkiye” be used instead of “Turkey” in all matters.
Turkey’s rebranding had become effective at the point in time the letter was received, according to the UN spokesperson. The letter was sent to the United Nations and other international bodies. “The procedure we began underneath the governance of our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to boost our nation’s brand value is about to be finalized,” the Turkish Foreign Minister tweeted.
WHY DID TURKEY CHANGE ITS NAME?

“The Government of the Republic of Turkiye, from now on will start using ‘Türkiye’ to substitute the same phrases such as ‘Turkey,’ ‘Turkei,’ and ‘Turquie,’ that were used in the history to refer to the ‘Republic of Turkiye,” Turkish FM wrote in a letter to UN Secretary-General. Turkiye is already the name given to the country by its citizens. The anglicized version, Turkey, is widely used in the country.
The affiliation of Turkey with the Turkish bird historically associated with Christmas, New Year, or Thanksgiving is one of the main reasons for the image rebranding.
One of the reasons, according to reports, is that one of the definitions of Turkey is “something which keeps failing badly” or “a moronic or silly person,” according to the Cambridge English Dictionary.
