What is UPSC?
Throughout the year, the UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION, a central government entity, conducts various exams for engineering, civil services, and defense across the country. The Indian government controls the organization, which was founded on October 1, 1926.
List of UPSC Exams:
1. Civil Services Examinations:
The UPSC conducts a major national competitive examination throughout India for recruits to the Indian Civil Service, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS).
Who all are eligible?
- Candidates must have completed or be pursuing a degree in any discipline from a recognized Indian university, and final year candidates are eligible to apply.
- On the 1st August of the examination year, you must be between the ages of 21 and 30.
- Under the Creamy layer, candidates in the General and OBC categories get four chances.
- Candidates in the OBC category have seven chances.
- There is no limitation on the number of attempts for SCs/STs.
What is the process of examination?
- The preliminary examination is the first stage.
- Stage 2 consists of a Comprehensive examination.
- While the final and third stage is Personality Assessment (Interview).
2. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE):
The Union Public Service Commission holds the “Combined Defence Services” Examination (CDS) twice a year for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy.
Who all are eligible?
- Officers’ Training Academy/Indian Military Academy: A degree from a reputable university or an equivalent qualification is required.
- B.Sc. in Physics and Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering for Naval Academy
- For the United States Air Force Academy: Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology, or a degree from a recognized university with Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level.
- The age limit is between 19-24 years at the Indian Military Academy
- The age limit is between 19-23 years in the Air Force Academy
- For Naval Academy, the age limit lies between 19 and 22 years.
- Officers’ Training Academy: 19-years-old to 25-years-old (not before 2 June on the Year of Examination).

3. National Defence Academy Examination (NDA):
A National Defence Academy is an Indian Armed Forces academy where recruits from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force receive training with each other before moving on to their respective ultimate service academies. The National Defense Agency (NDA) was founded on December 7, 1954.
Who all are eligible?
- To join the Indian army, you must have completed 10+2 in any subject.
- To pertain to the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, you must have a 10+2 in physics and mathematics.
- Minimum age is 16.5 years old and maximum age is 19 years old).
What is the process of examination?
- Written Exam
- Interview by a Services Selection Board
4. Engineering Services Examination:
The UPSC conducts a national competitive examination in India for civil services that perform technological and management functions for the Indian government. Engineering Services Examination is a four-stage competitive examination held by UPSC for recruitment to various Indian engineering services.
Who all are eligible?
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering (B.E. / B. Tech) from a reputable university or an equivalent qualification. A master’s degree in science or its equivalent is required.
- On the 1st August of the examination year, you must be between the ages of 21 and 30.
What is the process of examination?
- Paper I (Objective type) : General Ability Test (Part A: General English) & (Part B: General Studies)
- Papers II & III (Objective type) :CE / ME / EE/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
- Papers IV & V (Conventional type):CE / ME / EE/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
- Interview : Personality Test
