What is the IFS Examination?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Forest Service (IFS) examination for the recruits of officials at the All-India level by the Government of India for the modern management of its forest areas.

Some basic knowledge about IFS Exam:

·   One of three All India Services is IFS. The exam is for hiring into India’s forestry services. The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service are the other two All India Services (IPS).

·   The Indian Forest Service is part of the pinnacle All India Services group and it is one of India’s civil services.

·   Even when they have the authority to serve both the State and the Central Governments, IFS services are positioned under various State cadres and joint cadres.

·   The main responsibility of the IFS service is to carry out the National Forest Policy, which is designed to guarantee ecological integrity and natural ecosystems.

·   An IFS officer is largely self-contained from the district administration, with administrative, judicial, and budgetary powers in their realm. IFS officers hold all of the high positions in the state forest department.

·   Candidates must take the UPSC exam to become an officer in the Indian Forest Service. 

·   There are three stages to the IFS selection process: preliminary, main examination, and personality test.

·   Aspirants should keep in mind that they must take the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination and pass it to advance to the second stage of the evaluation, the IFS (Main Examination).

·   Candidates who pass the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination and meet the IFS eligibility criteria will be considered for the IFS Main Examination.

What are the eligibility criteria for IFS Exam?

1. For admission to the Indian Forest Service Examination, candidates must’ve been fit and healthy according to the physical standards. Candidates are encouraged to review the IFS official notification for more information on the rules and regulations.

2. A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology, or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent is required.

3. Candidates who are taking their degree examinations (with the required subjects) are also eligible to apply. If they pass the written portion of the exam, they must submit proof of passing the required exam alongside their detailed registration form, which must be filled out at that time.

4. As of August 1st, of the examination year, a candidate must be at least 21 years old and no more than 32 years old.

5. SC, ST, and OBCs are also covered for cumulative age relaxation in both categories.

What is the role of an IFS Officer?

·   Another important task that must be taken seriously is the preservation of forest trees. As an officer, you must keep an eye on illegal tree logging and collaborate with forest guards and security staff to remain vigilant at all times.

·   Animals are another valuable forest resource, and as a forest officer, you must ensure their security and avoid any unlawful behavior that harms or kills them. It is also essential for an officer to be aware of poaching and unlawful entry into the forest area.

·   As an officer, you’ll have to draw up plans for legal commercialization of timber and other resources.

·   As an officer, you’ll be in charge of carrying out the National Forest Policy.

·   One of the main responsibilities of an IFS officer is to preserve and manage the forest’s heritage while also working to preserve its resources.

·   As an officer, you must work to increase the number of trees planted in the forest, as well as organise and take part in such events.

·   You’ll need to conduct regular forest surveys to ensure that the work is being done correctly. Travel will be included as well.
