Indian Engineering Services Exam

Engineers who work for the Indian government and are designated as Class – 1 officers are members of the Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Examination (ESE). 

They are in charge of a large portion of the public sector economy, which includes Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water Engineering, Engineers’ Defence Service, and Central Engineering Service, to name a few. The type of work these bureaucracies do is determined largely by their engineering degree and the customer support or cadre into which they are recruited. The career progresses smoothly, and you gain a lot of respect. The position of Asst. Executive Engineer is the first to be offered, and the hierarchy ends with the position of Chairman/Managing Director.

For enrollment in the Indian Engineering Services, the UPSC holds a combined competitive examination. The following are the categories in which qualified candidates are recruited:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering Electronics &
  • Telecommunication Engineering

ESE Exam Pattern

Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination (Objective Type Papers) for the selection of candidates for the Main Exam

Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination (Conventional Type Papers) 

Stage-III: Personality Test.

What is the eligibility criterion?

  • When an applicant is finally advised by the Commission, he or she will be required to undergo a medical examination as and when the Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) determines, regardless of whether he or she has previously undergone a medical examination and been found fit or unfit based on that examination.
  • Regional Rail Hospitals under the Ministry of Railways will conduct the medical examination (Railway Board). Additional instructions for candidates can be found in the UPSC’s official notification. For all allotment purposes, the Railways Medical Board’s findings will be considered final and binding.
  • Obtained an engineering degree from a university established by an act of the central or state legislature in India, or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be universities under section 3 of the university grants commission act, 1956.
  • Provided, however, that a candidate for the Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts and Engineer Group ‘A’ in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organization) may possess any of the above qualifications or the following qualifications: With Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as a special subject, an M.Sc. degree or its equivalent is required.
  • The Indian Radio Regulatory Service (IRRS) is a government-run organization that regulates – Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as a specialization M.Sc. degree or equivalent.
  • A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st of January the year of the exam.

Roles and Responsibilities of an IES officer:

  • After being hired, they are assigned to the position of Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director.
  • They are elevated to executive engineer, director, or work manager after 3 to 4 years of experience.
  • After 8 years of service, they are promoted to deputy general manager or joint director. They can advance to the joint general manager or level 2 chief engineer after 13 years of experience. To become a chief engineer or additional general manager, you only need 20 years of experience. After 30 years of service to the Indian government, they were promoted to the senior general manager or engineer-in-chief.
  • The IES officers with the most experience (34 years) has the best performance.
