It is the birthday of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was born on April 14, 1891.

It has been an official public holiday in India since 2015. Ambedkar fought for equality his entire life, hence his birthday is commemorated as “Equality Day” in India, and a request to the United Nations to name this day “International Equality Day” is being made.

On April 14, 2016, citizens paid respect to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar at the event of his hundred and twenty-fifth start anniversary at Parliament House in New Delhi. Ambedkar Jayanti processions are held at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai and Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur by his devotees. Senior national officials, such as the President, Prime Minister, and leaders of major political parties, pay homage to Ambedkar’s statue at the Parliament of India in New Delhi.

Throughout his life, Dr. Ambedkar battled against societal evils such as untouchability and for the rights of Dalits and other socially backward communities. Dr. Ambedkar was elected as India’s first Law Minister in the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet. In 1990, he was posthumously given the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. 

Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh. He was the 14th child of his parents, his father was a Subedar in the Indian Army stationed at Mhow cantonment in MP. Because his parents were from the Hindu Mahar caste, Ambedkar faced terrible discrimination from all corners of society. The Mahar cast was regarded as “untouchable” by the higher class.

Discrimination and humiliation followed Ambedkar even to the Army Academy run by the British government. Discrimination followed him wherever he went. Ambedkar got admission to Mumbai’s Elphinstone College in 1908. Sayaji Rao III, the Gayakwad monarch of Baroda, granted Ambedkar a monthly scholarship of twenty-five rupees. 

He had to suffer the humiliation for being an ‘Untouchable’ even at Baroda. In order to improve his education, he traveled to England on his own dime in 1920. The London University conferred the honorary degree of D.Sc. to him. The University of Columbia conferred upon him a Doctorate on June 8, 1927. When Bhimrao Ambedkar returned to India, he saw that caste discrimination was practically tearing the country apart, so he determined to oppose it. Ambedkar advocated for reservations for Dalits and other religious minorities.

Dr. BR Ambedkar led the team that wrote India’s Constitution. He was born in Mhow, Central Province, on April 14, 1891 (present-day Madhya Pradesh).
