Combined Geo-Scientist Exam

For recruitment and selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist Group ‘A’ in GSI and Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist ‘B’), Group ‘A’ for Central Ground Water Board, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination (CGGE).

In September of each year, the Committee issues a notice for the Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination to shortlist candidates for the positions. A competitive evaluation will be used to make the choice. Their admittance will be conditional on meeting the given prescription eligibility rules at all stages of the examination.

The examination will be held in accordance with the UPSC’s rules and regulations. Candidates competing for positions in the Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination will be required to take all of the subjects listed in their respective categories.

The exam takes place in three stages:

Preliminary Examination (Stage I)

Main Examination (Stage II)

Personality Test (Stage III) 

Personality Test (Stage III) 

The Preliminary examination will be used to screen candidates for the Main Exam. It will be a computer-based examination with two papers and objective-type questions. The final excellence will be determined by the marks obtained in this examination. The General English Paper will be phased out.

Who all are eligible for the CGGE Exam?

·   For Geologists Gr ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India- Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Geological Science, Geology, Applied Geology, Geo-Exploration, Mineral Exploration, Engineering Geology, Earth Science and Resource Management, Marine Geology, Oceanography, and Geochemistry, Geological Technology, Coastal Area Studies, Petroleum Geosciences, Petroleum Exploration, or Geophysical Technology from a recognized board or university.

·   For Geophysicists Gr ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India- Candidates must have an M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a recognized university.

·   For Chemists Group ‘A’- Candidates must have an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, or Analytical Chemistry from a recognized university to work for the Geological Survey of India.

·   For Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B), Group ‘A’ in Central Ground Water Board- A master’s degree in geology, applied geology, or marine geology from a well-known university is required.

·   A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August, the year of examination.

·   For ex-servicemen and Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribal candidates, there is a 5-year age relaxation. It is 3 years for OBC candidates, and ten years for deaf-mute, blind, and orthopedically disabled applicants.

Roles and responsibilities of a CGGE officer?

·   Geologists study the Earth’s materials, processes, and history. They look into the formation of rocks or what has occurred to them since then. Stratigraphers, who research stratification of rocks, and mineralogists, who study the structural features of minerals, are two sub-groups of geologists.

·   Geoscientists frequently supervise technicians’ work and collaborate with other scientists around the world and in the lab.

·   Their main goals are all to design and conduct field studies, which entail going to different places to take samples and conduct experiments.

·   Produce geologic maps and graphs.

·   Prepare scientific reports in writing Clients, colleagues, and other relevant individuals will be informed of their findings.

·   Other scientists write review reports and conduct research.

·   To locate natural resource deposits and estimate their size, examine satellite photos, thorough records of shale formations discovered during drilling, rock samples, and other data sources.
