The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is part of the National Film Awards, a surprisingly coveted collection of film corporation honors. The award is referred to after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, the pioneering filmmaker who gave India its first film, ‘Raja Harishchandra,’ in 1913.
The award is considered the highest honor in the Indian film industry. It is obtainable for “its outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award was established by the government in 1969 and consists of a ‘Swarna Kamal,’ a cash prize of INR 10 lakh, a certificate, a silk roll, and a shawl.
The award is presented by the President of India in the presence of the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, as well as the Chairpersons of the juries. Devika Rani Roerich received the award for the first time in 1969. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by The Directorate of Film Festivals an agency set up thru the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The honoree is recognized for making an “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.” These winners are chosen by a committee comprised of prominent figures from the Indian film industry. On Monday, the latest Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards were attended by prominent Bollywood and television celebrities who were honored for their contributions to Indian cinema.
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke
He was born in Trimbak, Maharashtra in 1870. He studied engineering and sculpture and became interested in motion pictures after seeing the silent film The Life of Christ in 1906. Prior to entering the film industry, Phalke worked as a photographer, owned a printing press, and even collaborated with the renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma.
In 1913, Phalke wrote, produced, and directed India’s first feature film, Raja Harishchandra. As a result of its commercial success, Phalke went on to make 95 more films and 26 short films over the next 19 years. He is known as the “Father of Indian Cinema”. Phalke founded the Hindustan Film Company with the help of several partners.
He later went on to produce a number of films. Phalke, a skilled film technician, dabbled in a variety of special effects. His use of mythological themes as well as trick photography wowed his audience. Phalke’s work fell out of favor with the introduction of sound in cinema and the expansion of the film industry. He left the film industry in the 1930s and died alone, disheartened, and sick.
In recognition of Phalke’s contributions to Indian cinema, the Indian government established the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969, which is presented annually by the President of India for lifetime contributions to Indian cinema.
The Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival 2023
The awards were announced on Monday, with The Kashmir Files winning Best Film and Anupam Kher winning Most Versatile Actor Of The Year for the film. Alia Bhatt not only received her Best Actress award for Gangubai Kathiawadi, but she also accepted her husband Ranbir Kapoor’s Best Actor award for Brahmastra on his behalf.
“RRR” by SS Rajamouli and “The Kashmir Files” by Vivek Agnihotri won the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards 2023. Alia Bhatt’s performance in “Gangubai Kathiawadi” earned her an award. Anupam Kher, Ranbir Kapoor, Rekha, Varun Dhawan, Rishab Shetty, and other celebrities were honored as well. Film of the Year was awarded to RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Junior NTR and Ram Charan.
Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files was named Best Film at the film festival’s award ceremony. Rishab Shetty of Kantara was named ‘Most Promising Actor’. For their performances in Gangubai Kathiawadi and Brahmastra, Part One – Shiva, Alia Bhatt, and Ranbir Kapoor were named ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Actor,’ respectively.
For his work in Bhediya, Varun Dhawan was named ‘Critics’ Choice Best Actor,’ while Anupam Kher was named ‘Most Versatile Actor’ of the Year for his work in The Kashmir Files. Rekha received the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution in the Film Industry’ for her contributions to the film industry. Anupamaa, Zain Imam, Sachet Tandon, and Neeti Mohan, among others, received awards.
Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, starring Ajay Devgn, was named ‘Best Web Series’ at the festival. The Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival recognizes and celebrates talent in the Indian film industry. Veteran actor Rekha was honored with an award for her ‘Outstanding Contribution In The Film Industry’.
She wore a golden saree to the event and was seen bonding with Alia, who was dressed in a white saree. The two exchanged hugs and kisses before posing for the cameras. Meanwhile, Hariharan won an award for ‘Outstanding Contribution In The Music Industry’.
