Govardhan Puja wishes 2022
Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut or Annakoot (literally, “mountain of food”), is a Hindu festival where devotees of Krishna worship Govardhan Hill and prepare and offer Krishna a variety of vegetarian dishes as a show of gratitude. This day commemorates the Bhagavat Puran incident in which Krishna raised Govardhan Hill to provide shelter from torrential downpours for the citizens of Vrindavan. The incident is seen as a picture of how God will protect all of his followers who turn solely to him for protection. As a customary reminder and to reinforce their trust in turning to God for protection, believers present God with a mountain of food that is a symbolic image of the Govardhan Hill.
The majority of Krishna’s heroic and holy deeds with his childhood friends are connected to Braj, where he spent the majority of his formative years. Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan (Govardhan Hill), a low hill in the middle of Braj, on his little finger is one of the most significant incidents in the Bhagavata Purana. According to the Bhagavata Purana, during the fall festival, cowherds who resided in the forest close to Govardhan used to pay homage to Indra, the rain and storm God. Krishna objected to this because he wanted the locals to solely worship the Purna Parmatma and not any other deities, objects of worship, idols, etc. At this suggestion, Indra erupted in wrath.
Shri Krishna was widely regarded by all, despite being younger than the bulk of people in the city. The Gokul populace adopted Shri Krishna’s advice as a result Indra was enraged to see the loyalty of the people transfer their devotedness from him to Krishna.
As a response to his selfish wrath, Indra made the decision to unleash thunderstorms and torrential rains throughout the city. All the citizens of the city were given shelter from the storms by Shri Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan mount on his little finger. After 7-8 days of uninterrupted rain, when no storms had affected the people of Gokul, Indra gave up and put an end to the storms. A “great offering of meals and delicacies to the mountain,” or “giriyajna,” was made by the villagers to honor Mount Govardhan.
On this special occasion, people used to make Govardhan of cow dung in their houses and worship them.
