Why We Celebrate Lohri?
The root of the word Lohri is “Til + Rodi” from which Tilaudi is made and later it became Lohri. In many places, Lohri is also called Lohi or Loi. People celebrate this festival with great pomp.
The tradition of celebrating the festival of Lohri is also visible in the Vedic period. In ancient times sages used to perform Havan to please the gods. It was such a religious act, in which the members of the family met and shared each other’s happiness and sorrow. By adding ghee, honey, sesame seeds, jaggery, etc., the smoke rising from the havan is used to purify and disinfect the whole environment. It also helped in raining.
