Holi (pronounced “holi”) is a Hindu religious holiday celebrating the victory of good over evil and is one of India’s most famous festivals. The festival celebrates feelings of love and pure joy in a chaotic national powder fight.

Holi 2023 is on March 8th. The main celebration begins on March 7th and lasts for two days. March 7th is the day when most of Holi’s religious ceremonies take place, including the Holika Dahan (ceremonial bonfire).

March 8th is Color Day, and the whole country takes to the streets to celebrate. Holi is an ancient Hindu festival meant to express pure joy in the triumph of good over evil. It also represents the arrival of spring, falling in love, and forgiving past mistakes.

Legend Behind Holi 

Although this started as a Hindu festival, it is now celebrated by most Indians regardless of their religion, making it a particularly special holiday in India. The name Holi comes from the legend behind the holiday that the demon Holika was sent by King Hiranyakashyap to kill his son Prahlada.

Holika attempted to burn Prahlada at the stake, but due to her evil intentions, she was the one who died at the stake. Now that we know why Holi exists, where does the battle of colors fit in?

Krishna Legend 

The battle of colors actually stems from the legend of Lord Krishna, a Hindu deity who is also worshipped on Holi. According to the story, Krishna was known to play pranks and pull pranks. One of the tricks he did with the village girls was to douse them with paint and water.

Tradition
The first day of the festival is Holika Dahan, also known as Choti Holi or Little Holi, where religious ceremonies are held. The main event of the Holika Dahan is a large bonfire in which Holika dolls, symbolizing the destruction of evil, are burned.

Construction of firewood for a Holika fire can begin weeks in advance. Each district usually has a large log in its common room. In preparation for the festival, people bring sticks and other combustibles and add them to the firewood until they form one big pile.

Holi has great cultural significance in Hindu culture. It is also a day to make a fresh start, learn from past mistakes, end conflicts, forget, and forgive. Most of the time, people pay off their debts and forgive them by accepting new businesses in their lives.

Preparation

Before the festival, people often gather wood and combustibles to build bonfires in parks, community centers, and squares. Preparation also includes fueling the home with food, party drinks, and festive foods such as  malpuaas , gujiya, and many other foods.

On the eve of Holi, the cremation is lit up to mark the Holika Dahan. People also gather around the fire to sing and dance.

Colors


There are many colors that can be used for this occasion. Traditionally, users of natural washable paints are best suited for the occasion. Available colors include duck, kumkum, turmeric, and neem. In addition, if conventional colors cannot be determined, commercially available water-based pigments can be used. Across India, Holi celebrations vary from region to region.

However, common rituals include praying, singing, dancing around a campfire after sunset, and, of course, throwing bright “colors.”
