Indian Railway Personnel Service Exam

The Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) is a Government of India Group-A Central Service and the newest of the Group ‘A’ Organized Services on Indian Railways. It was established in 1976, with the first direct recruitment taking place in 1980 through the UPSC’s Civil Services Examination. 

The officers in this service are in charge of overseeing the Indian Railways’ Human Resources. 

The Civil Services Examination is used to select candidates for the cadre. IRPS officers work in the Ministry of Railways’ Establishment Directorate and Personnel Department, as well as the railway manufacturing lines and workshops at the Zonal and Divisional levels.

Who all are eligible to sit in the exam?

  • A candidate’s nationality must be one of the ones that follow: Citizen of India;
  • The subject of Nepal;
  • The subject of Bhutan;
  • A Tibetan refugee who arrived in India for permanent settlement before January 1, 1962.
  • Citizens of India; Migrants from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam for permanent settlement in India.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from one of the recognized universities is required of the candidate.

  • Candidates who have taken the qualifying examination and are awaiting results, as well as those who have not yet taken the qualifying examination, are eligible to take the Preliminary Exam.

  • Including the application for the Main Examination, such candidates must provide proof of passing the said examination. Candidates with government-recognized or equivalent professional and technical qualifications are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have passed their final year of MBBS or any other medical examination but have not yet completed their internship can also take the Main Exam. They must, however, submit proof of passing the final professional medical examination from the relevant university.
  • The minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 30 years as of 1st of August in the year of examination is eligible.

What are the roles and responsibilities?

  • It oversees all aspects of employee welfare, including residential housing, canteens, vacation homes, consumer societies, schools, clubs, institutes, and hospitals, among other things. The railway is a model employer, with a plethora of welfare programs in place to care for its employees and their families.
  • Another responsibility is dealing with the provisions of various laws and acts, such as the Industrial Dispute Act, Factory Act, Workman Compensation Act, Payment of Wages, and Minimum Wages, and ensuring that they are implemented in the railways. This branch also deals with the explanation of rules and orders.
  • In the railways, the personnel officer also serves as the welfare officer.
  • The personnel department, which is responsible for employee service as well as personal issues, works in close collaboration with all other departments in the railways as a consultant and adviser.
