The Indian Trade Service (ITS) is a non-profit organization. The civil service was established in 1965. It was established as a highly specialized cadre to handle India’s foreign commerce. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of the Ministry of Commerce is in charge of the ITS.
The Department is functionally organized into the following nine Divisions:
- International Trade Policy Division
- Foreign Trade Territorial Division
- Export Products Division
- Export Industries Division
- Export Services Division
- Economic Division
- Administration & General Service Division
- Finance Division
- Supply Division
Who all are eligible to sit in the exam?
- A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology, or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering from a recognized university or comparable is required.
- Candidates who are taking their degree examination (with the required subjects) are also eligible to compete. If they pass the written portion of the exam, they must submit proof of passing this same required examination along with their detailed application form, which should be filled out at that time.
- The minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 30 years as of 1st of August in the year of examination is eligible.
- Up to a maximum of 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
- For OBC candidates, a maximum of three years is allowed.
- For candidates from the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the following criteria apply: For a maximum of five years
- Up to a maximum of 5 years for members of the Defence Services.
- Service servicemen, including commissioned officers and ECOs/SSCOs, who have served in the military for at least 5 years and have been discharged: Maximum of 5 years
- For ECOs/SSCOs who have completed a 5-year initial period of service in the military: For a maximum of five years
- Up to ten years for the blind, deaf-mute, orthopedically handicapped people.
- The maximum number of attempts restriction is as follows:
- For General category candidates: 6 attempts
- For OBC candidates: 9 attempts;
- For SC/ST candidates: No restriction;
- Physically handicapped- 9 attempts for general and OBC, while unlimited for SC/ST.

- Foreign Trade Assistant Director-General Foreign Trade Deputy Director-General.
- Director General of Foreign Trade / Joint Director General of Foreign Trade (Foreign Trade).
- Development Commissioner/Additional Director General of Foreign Trade (SEZ).
