India has built a unique liquid-mirror telephoto lens atop a mountain in Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan region. The Indian liquid Mirror Telescope will keep a keen watch just on skies in order to spot space rocks, space particulate, cosmic rays, and gravity lenses, all of which are transient or variable objects. The one-of-a-kind observatory is the first and largest liquid reflection telescope in India and Asia. According to reports, the telescope has begun commissioning in India and will begin scientific observations in October 2022. The Worldwide Liquid Mirror Telescope in India is also the world’s only operations and maintenance liquid mirror telescope.
From an altitude of 2,450 meters in the Himalayas, the liquid Mirror Telescope in Uttarakhand will observe asteroids, space debris, supernovae, and all other celestial objects. Only a few Liquid Mirror telescopes have been built in the past, and they were mostly used for spy satellites or military applications.
The Advanced Mechanical and Optical Systems Corporate entity and the Centre Spatial de Liege, Belgium, designed and developed the International Liquid Mirror Telescope. Belgium and Canada co-funded the Liquid Mirror Telescope’s major measuring instruments, while India is willing to take responsibility again for the telescope’s operations and maintenance.
The Liquid Mirror Telescope will be stationary, unlike conventional observatories that can be navigated to identify particular stellar source objects. The findings and imaging will primarily take place at the zenith, or the highest point in the sky. The most recent Liquid Mirror Telescope is a survey telescope with a high chance of finding newer objects.
The data from the Liquid Reflection Telescope will be ideal for conducting deep photometric and astrometric variance surveys over a five-year period.
