Hockey is probably one of the oldest games in India. The name “Hockey” is derived from the French word “bouquet” which refers to a crooked stick. It is used to hit a small ball. India’s national sport Hockey is played worldwide.
Hockey is a sport which is played on the field when each team plays with 10 members and a goalkeeper. This game started as one to play with a stick or rod and a ball. On November 7th, all hockey associations and clubs assembled in Gwalior and established the INDIAN HOCKEY FEDERATION (IFH).
Britishers introduced Hockey in India. Between the lead 18th century and the early 19th century.
The first Hockey Association of India was the Bengal Hockey Association. Which became popular and spread among the places like Bombay, Orissa Bihar as well as New Delhi. Hockey is most played in the Olympic games. United India won the gold medal in hockey for the first time in Amsterdam.
Apart from men women in India have also taken up this game and play will their full hearts.
Journey of hockey in India
Dhyan Chand who is known as the wizard and the magician is also known as the father of the national sport hockey. He was born on 29th August 1905 in Allahabad and died on 3rd December 1979 at the age of 74.
India got its first chance to play in the Olympics by applying to the Indian Hockey Federation. Earned the FIH membership in 1927.
From 1997 till today India has won 8 gold medals
In the first-ever Olympic match India scored 29 goals Dhyanchand School 14 of them. Also It was the United States which made Dhyan Chand the captain of the Indian hockey team. Also he proved by being in the final Olympic games.
By the end of world war II in 1948, India found its new legendary player Balbir Singh SR. Also He won gold medals in 1948, 1952, and 1956.
Apart from the Olympics India has even won medals in the Asian Games in 1958 and 1962.
in Olympics Jaipal Singh a boy from Ranchi who was a student in oxford was made the captain of hockey in Olympics in the year1928 and so far India has played 5 matches.
Women made their entrance by playing for the first time in 1908 games in London. Also In the 2020 Olympics, India’s women’s Hockey team qualified for the semi-finals for the first time ever where they showed spectacular performance of being good sportsperson and teamwork.
Though they faced three defeats in the first three matches, still it didn’t make them weak. Also the entire team showed a never-ending spirit and played matches with the Netherlands with a score of 5-1, and was outclassed by Germany with a score of 2-0.
