USA On Russia Ukraine War
Since 2014, the United States has committed more than $7.3 billion in security and non-security assistance to Ukraine.
President Joe Biden signed the bipartisan Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act on March 15 to provide an additional $13.6 billion in military, humanitarian, and economic assistance to Ukraine to help it defend itself from Russia’s unprovoked further invasion.
Furthermore, the US provided three sovereign loan guarantees totaling $3 billion.
To ensure the Ukrainian government can function effectively during the conflict, and to support the Ukrainian people as they face attacks from Russia’s forces.
Assistance will also be made available to countries affected by the Ukraine crisis through the Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act. The United States is the single largest single donor of humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
On March 24, Joe Biden announced that the United States is prepared to provide more than $1 billion in new funding for humanitarian assistance to those affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine and its global consequences, including an increase in food insecurity.
Up to 100,000 Ukrainian citizens and others fleeing Russia’s aggression will be welcomed in the United States.
To meet this commitment, the United States is considering all legal options, including the United States Refugee Admissions Program, humanitarian parole, and visas.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has sparked heated debate in the United States, not only about how the United States should respond but also about the extent to which the invasion represents a threat to democracy.
President Biden’s Trip To Ukraine
President Joe Biden arrived in Kyiv on Monday for the first time since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago, demonstrating his commitment to the country and its struggle in dramatic personal fashion as the war enters an uncertain new phase.
Joe Biden’s highly secretive visit, which took place as air raid sirens could be heard ringing out around Kyiv while Biden walked around the gold-domed St. Michael’s Cathedral with President Volodymyr Zelensky, comes at a critical point in the 12-month conflict.
With Russia getting equipped for an anticipated spring offensive and Ukraine hoping to retake territory soon.
Joe Biden announced a $500 million aid package, saying it would include more military equipment like artillery ammunition, javelins, and Howitzers.
“One year on, Kyiv still stands. And Ukraine is still there. “Democracy endures,” said Biden. The United States and other Western countries have been rushing arms, tanks, and ammunition to Ukraine in the hopes of altering the course of the conflict.
By paying a personal visit, Joe Biden is providing a unique image of American support for Zelensky, who has spent the past year attempting to rally the world behind his country and pleading for greater levels of assistance.
After a long, covert journey from Washington, Biden arrived in Kyiv at 8 a.m. local time and arrived at the Mariinsky Palace half an hour later.
Privately, US officials have expressed hope that the massive influx of weaponry into Ukraine, which includes new vehicles, longer-range missiles, and Patriot air defense systems, will help Ukraine prevail on the battlefield and put Zelensky in a better position to negotiate an end to the war.
However, it is unclear what parameters Zelensky might be willing to accept in any peace talks, and the US has consistently refused to outline what an agreement would possibly appear like apart from mentioning it will likely be as much as Zelensky to decide.
President Joe Biden took a nearly 10-hour train ride from the Polish border to demonstrate his administration’s “unwavering support” for Russia’s invasion, nearly a year after it began.
Mr. Biden accompanied Mr. Zelensky to St. Michael’s monastery in downtown Kyiv. where the sun glinted off the golden domes as the air-raid siren wailed.
The two leaders walked alongside the Wall of Remembrance, which features portraits of more than 4,500 soldiers who died because Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014 and primarily fomented an insurrection in Japanese Ukraine.
The air-raid siren had stopped by the time Mr. Biden got back into his motorcade and left the monastery, and alarms sound almost every day in Kyiv, but the blare of the siren added to the tense atmosphere.
Ukrainian officials have warned that Russia is planning a large-scale missile attack on the anniversary of the war on Friday.
Joe Biden’s Secretive Trip
White House officials describe Joe Biden’s unexpected visit to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv as “unprecedented in modern times” because he appeared in a war zone under constant attack.
Previous presidential trips to war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan, they say, were backed up by a large US military presence.
Despite widespread speculation among the press corps that Mr. Biden was planning a trip to Ukraine while in Poland, the visit caught everyone off guard.
The sight of him appearing alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky in the heart of Kyiv, amid air raid sirens, speaks louder than anything he can say in a speech in Poland.
On board was a purposefully small team of his closest aides, as well as a medical team. Only two journalists were permitted to accompany the president.
They were sworn to secrecy and had their cell phones confiscated. They were not permitted to report the visit until Mr. Biden arrived in Kyiv.
According to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Russia was informed of the trip a few hours before Mr. Biden’s departure. President Biden then traveled for ten hours by train to Kyiv.
He could have gone to other places in Ukraine that were easier to get to, but he wanted to make the symbolic trip to Kyiv itself.
While the president’s trip serves as a signal to Moscow of the Biden administration’s commitment to assisting Ukraine, it also serves as a demonstration to the Ukrainian people.
