In 1576, Odisha fell to the Mughal Empire, and parts of the coastal region were taken over by the Marathas in the mid-17th century. The East India Company united the southern coast of Orissa with President Madras following the Carnatic War. In 1912, Bihar and Orissa became separate provinces.
