Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is a celebratory day observed on 9th January by the republic of India to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India.
This day also commemorates Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915.
It was established in 2000 and sponsored by the ministry of external affairs of the government of India with other ministries’ contributions. History of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas
On 11 January 2004, President Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam met with the Diaspora at a tea hosted by him on the occasion of the current 2nd Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi.
The decision to mark Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was made in accordance with the recommendations of the government of India’s High-Level Committee (HLC) on the Indian Diaspora, which was chaired by L. M. Singhvi. On 8 January 2002, the then-Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, accepted the Committee’s findings during a public gathering at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi and announced the “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” (PBD) on 9 January 2002. The date was chosen to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa to India in 1915.
The occasion is marked by special programmes that recognise the contributions of NRI/PIO individuals of exceptional merit and felicitate NRI/PIO individuals who have made exceptional contributions in their chosen field/profession (Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (Hindi: NRI/PIO Award)) and provide a forum for people of the diaspora to discuss issues and concerns. Since 2003, the event has been organised annually and is sponsored by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), which was initially sponsored by FICCI.
The 8th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held on January 7-9, 2010 and was webcast live at the official Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs website. It was also covered live on social media via live blogging and live tweeting at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas,[15] an online platform powered by Kotak.Bank Mahindra. On the occasion, India’s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, unveiled the Overseas Indians Facilitation Centre[16], an investment facilitation platform for overseas Indians, with the goal of improving relationships with the diaspora and partnering in India’s growth story.

- The 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2023 Convention will be held from January 8 to 10, 2023 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India.
- “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal,” is the topic of the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention 2023.
- During the 17th PBD Convention, 30 distinguished diaspora members will be awarded Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards.
- All participants, including official delegates, invited guests, government officials, artists and entertainers, and journalists, must register for the PBD 2023 Convention. Registration will only be available online.
- Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9th in India.
- This holiday was officially recognised in 2003.
- The 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2023, according to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs, will be held in Indore in January of the following year.
- Ausaf Sayeed, secretary of the consular, passport, and visa division, and Iqbal Singh Bains, chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh, he said, had signed a cooperation agreement to host the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas. The occasion was also attended by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
