National Youth Day is marked by the people of India every year on January 12. This day commemorates the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, a social reformer and esteemed thinker. National Youth Day is honored to commemorate Swamiji Vivekananda, who had great confidence in their youth and his ideas. Always emphasizing the youth’s contribution to nation-building and encouraging them to keep a positive outlook, Vivekananda inspired them to be leaders.
At the Chicago World Parliament of Religion in 1893, Vivekananda represented India. He focused on eliminating all types of fanaticism during his remarks. He shared Hinduism’s emphasis on love and compassion.
The audience applauded Swami Vivekananda for his remarks and gave him a standing ovation. In 1984, the Indian government declared that January 12 would be marked National Youth Day to recognize his contributions to the nation. Vivekananda’s ideas and objectives were intended to be instilled in the minds of the young, particularly students. The purpose of the day is to encourage young people to think rationally.
Narendra Nath Datta, Swami Vivekananda later adopted, was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, West Bengal. His mother, Bhuvaneshwari Devi, worked as a housewife, and his father, Vishwanath Dutt, was an attorney.
Vivekananda renounced all of his worldly luxuries and took on the life of a monk following the passing of his spiritual leader Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. His message of tolerance, compassion, and peace was never repressed.
Education was the main tool for empowering the populace among the many ways Swami Vivekananda proposed to restore Indian society. He once stated, “Is education worth the term if it doesn’t help the common mass of people ready themselves for the battle of life if it doesn’t bring out the strength of character, a spirit of charity, and the courage of a lion? The true test of education is the ability to stand up for oneself. He saw education as secular instruction that helped students develop their moral character and establish their values.
Ramakrishna Mission
The Ramakrishna Mission, an organization founded by Swami Vivekanand and well-known for its commendable work in the fields of value-based education, culture, health, women’s empowerment, youth, and tribal welfare and relief and rehabilitation, received approval from the Indian government to carry out a “Value Education Project” in honor of the 150th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s birth. This project aims to instill in young people a sense of morality.
Additionally, it provided a US$1.5 million endowment to the University of Chicago to establish the Swami Vivekananda Chair, whose primary objective is to promote Vivekananda through talks, seminars, and other appropriate academic activities on Indian culture and Indian studies.
For two years, each scholar will hold the chair. Additionally, the University of Chicago will arrange for a researcher exchange between its institutions and the Government of India. The message of religious harmony, international understanding, and the spiritual unity of humanity will be furthered by this long-term endowment, which was a goal of Swami Vivekananda.
Swami Vivekananda advised, “Teach yourselves, teach everyone their true nature, invoke the sleeping soul and see how it awakens. When this sleeping spirit is awakened to self-conscious activity, power, grandeur, goodness, purity, and everything beautiful will come.
The current administration is working to implement Swami Vivekananda’s principles. We will meet more than a billion people’s needs and ambitions by coordinating efforts in the fields where the nation excels. Agriculture, education, health care, dependable and high-quality electricity, infrastructure for all surface transportation across the nation, information and communication technology, and the strategic sector are all interconnected.
India’s food, economic, and national security will improve if work on these issues for comprehensive action gets underway seriously. On National Youth Day each year, several activities and lectures are held. Discussions at these meetings often center on Vivekananda’s teachings.
To achieve the goals of great thinkers like Vivekananda, the government has embarked on a journey to create an independent, powerful, and modern India. “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” or “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” is the guiding principle.
These aren’t just catchphrases; they represent a promise to the populace, particularly young people, to lead the country to greater heights. Numerous ground-breaking initiatives have lately been unveiled. India is being promoted as a hub for global manufacturing through the “Make in India” campaign. The “Digital India” plan aims to make India a knowledge-based society and Economy. ‘Skill India’ is being launched to impart the necessary skills to prepare Indians for opportunities in the Indian Economy and abroad.
Smart City Projects launched
Several initiatives, including the Smart Cities Project, have been launched to develop infrastructure. The ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ and ‘Clean Ganga missions have been launched to build a clean and green India.
As the main stakeholders in the nation’s future, kids must actively participate in and support these government activities. Skill development and entrepreneurship are the main initiatives to set India on the growth path.
The government is attempting to invest heavily in India’s youth since doing so is essential to completing the challenging project of creating a modern and thriving India. Arise! as Swami Vivekananda once urged. Awake! And don’t stop until the goal is accomplished. Let’s all work together for the country with perseverance, patience, and purity because Swami believed these three qualities were crucial for success long ago.
This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the 25th National Youth Festival in Puducherry. The event will focus on shaping youth’s minds and transforming them into a united force for nation-building. Youth Summit will follow the inaugural ceremony.
