What is West Nile Fever?

The most common mosquito-borne illness is West Nile Fever. It has been found almost in every type of mosquito so far.   In contrast to certain other mosquito-borne diseases. for example, dengue fever, and chikungunya, occur throughout the year in India, and West Nile Fever only arises during the summer months.

In Kerala, West Nile Fever, which is spread by mosquitoes of the Culex species, claimed a life in 2019. The primary trigger of West Nile Fever in living beings is mosquito bites from infected mosquitoes that have become infected after feeding on infected animals. The West Nile virus percolates in its blood for a few days before attaining the salivary glands of the mosquito.

The West Nile Virus is then transmitted to people and animals through mosquito bites, where it can amplify and cause illness. The most common way for humans to contract West Nile Fever is through a bite of an infected mosquito. The disease can also be passed from parent to child thru blood transfusions, laboratory exposure to the viral infection, or by a diseased mother to her child.

West Nile Fever is not usually spread through interaction with infected humans or animals, or when an infected animal is eaten properly cooked. West Nile Virus, unlike all other mosquito-borne diseases, does not cause signs and symptoms in everyone who contracts it. Only one out of every five people develops West Nile symptoms and require treatment.

The signs of West Nile Fever are similar to those of any other high fever, such as headache, fever, and weakness. However, West Nile Virus can cause central nervous symptoms like dizziness, stupor, tremors, convulsions, and vision loss.
