When Jack Lange, a former minister of art and culture in France, and Maurice Fleuret established the Fête de la Musique in Paris in 1982 on the Summer Solstice, Music Day was first observed there. Because of this, World Music Day is often referred to as Fête de la Musique.
World Music Day is observed in order to make music available for free to all music lovers and to give aspiring and established musicians a stage on which to perform for an international audience. The value of music and its advantages for the human body and mind are celebrated.
