World No Tobacco Day 2022

Every year on May 31, World No Tobacco Day is observed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The 2022 World No Tobacco Day raises awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and its sector on health and the environment. It also informs people about the steps they can take to keep themself and their environment tobacco-free.

The World Health Organization’s World No Tobacco Day 2022 encourages governments around the world to implement policies that will help reduce smoking and the use of other tobacco. Tobacco kills more than 8 million people every year, according to the World Health Organization. The Indian government has also taken several numbers of steps to reduce the consumption of tobacco in the country. In 1987, the World Health Organization’s member states established World No Tobacco Day. That year, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a World No Smoking Day.

COTPA Act of 2003

In 2003, the Indian Parliament passed the COTPA Act, which prohibits advertisements and regulates the production, distribution, and supply of tobacco products in India.

The COTPA Act of 2003 was implemented to pay heed to a resolution adopted by the 39th World Health Assembly urging member countries to take steps to protect people from smoking unconscious tobacco second-hand smoke.

The COTPA Act of 2003 includes provisions such as prohibiting tobacco product advertisements, including cigarettes, prohibiting tobacco smoking in public places, and prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.

Initiatives:

1.In 1975, India passed the Cigarettes Act, which required health warnings to be displayed in advertisements, on cardboard boxes, and on cigarette packages.

2. India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare passed the COTPA Act in 2003.

3. Tobacco and nicotine could be used as additives in food products, according to a state and Central government real implications under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

4. In 2016, a toll-free number called the ‘Quit Line’ was established. It is now available in sixteen different languages.

5. Tobacco products are subject to a 28 percent GST imposed by the government.
