World Theatre Day 2023 theme is, “Theatre and a Culture of Peace” and it focuses that theatre plays an important role to produce peace in our culture and daily life. A theatre is a stage where performers use their artistic abilities to communicate a message to an audience through gestures, speech, song, music, or dance. Every year on March 27, the world commemorates World Theatre Day.

This day, established by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961, honours the essence, beauty, and significance of theatre arts, as well as their significant role in entertainment and the symbolic impact that theatre has on life. This day also serves to educate governments, politicians, institutions, and stakeholders all over the world who have yet to recognise the importance of theatre to people and its potential for economic growth.

Theatre is a unique and interesting part of a culture that has evolved over time, dating back a few thousand years. The term “theatre” derives from an ancient Greek term that means “a place for seeing,” and that definition is still relevant today. Theatre is a medium of art that requires a diverse range of talented artists involved in a variety of ways, whether writing and directing, producing and acting, creating beautiful costumes, or doing lighting and scene design. And World Theatre Day is here to show appreciation for those who give their time and talent to make the show go on.

History

The International Theatre Institute (ITI) established World Theatre Day in 1962 as a day to honour and celebrate the beauty, creativity, hard work, and artistry that go into all aspects of theatre production. It was also intended to remind people of the great power that theatre can have, whether it is celebrated locally or globally.

Today, World Theatre Day is sponsored by ITI, the World Organization for Performing Arts, and the day is also supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. World Theatre Day will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a global online celebration in 2022. Peter Sellers, the Director of Opera, Theatre, and Festivals, hosted the event and delivered the annual message. Furthermore, the celebration included a platform for theatrical expression, which featured performances from 37 different emerging artists from all over the world.

These performances were recorded and broadcast on the ITI website, where they could be viewed from anywhere in the world. Every year, World Theatre Day is an important time to celebrate those who support and enjoy the theatre. Patrons of local theatre, costume designers, musicians, scriptwriters, set designers, actors, and a plethora of others will delight in raising awareness for the importance of this day to the arts.

Since ancient Greece, the theatre has been a popular form of art and entertainment, thrilling and awe-inspiring audiences. Theatre not only entertains and educates, but it also combines various art forms to provide its live audience with a unique stage experience. Every year, various events are held to commemorate World Theatre Day.

The World Theatre Day International Message, presented by a famous art figure and reflecting on the history of theatre and a culture of peace in today’s world, is a prominent feature of these annual events. Jean Cocteau, a French poet and playwright, wrote the first World Theatre Day International Message in 1962. Helen Mirren, a multi-award-winning British actress known for winning the Academy Award in 2007 for her performance in “The Queen,” wrote the Message of World Theatre Day in 2021.
